Both air bags deployed and all four doors swung open as the car hit the rocky surface.

Miraculously, neither girl was seriously hurt and both of them clambered out of the car but were unable to get a mobile phone signal to call for help.

Stranded in pitch darkness, the pals had no choice but to clamber back up the cliff until they reached a ledge 30ft from the top where they got a signal and dialled 999.

The terrified pair then hugged each other and sobbed for 30 minutes until firefighters arrived to winch them to safety.

A-Level student muzic-ivan.inforal said: "I"ve only been driving a month and me and Francesca just fancied a drive. We were muzic-ivan.infoming home when suddenly the car skidded.

"I think it hit leaves and we were spinning and bounced off at least one tree. Then we were falling - it was pitch black so I didn"t really know what was happening.

"We span four times and then suddenly there was a massive bang. The doors flew open and all the glass smashed and the air bags pinned us back.

"I said to Francesca - "are you alive?" She said "yes" and we climbed out the driver"s side. For a while we just sat there on rocks looking each other.

"I"ve been to see the car since and I can"t actually believe we got out of it. It is a muzic-ivan.infomplete wreck."

Francesca, also an A-level student, added: "We"d only gone out for a drive because we were bored. Everything was fine and then the car started skidding and making a weird noise.

"Then we were in bushes and then falling through the air. I thought I was going to die. It was terrifying."

The accident happened at a beauty spot known as Jeffrey"s Leap near St Martin on Jersey, at around 8.50pm on Monday.

After climbing out of the car the school friends then tried to ring for help but were unable to get a signal on their handsets as the tide came in around them.

muzic-ivan.inforal said: "We just stared climbing. It was raining a bit so it was pretty horrible but we were so shaken up we just kept going.

"Eventually we got to a ledge and Francesca had a phone signal. She called 999 first and then my mum, who totally panicked.

"I think we sat there crying for about an hour before the firefighters arrived and winched down to us. We"re both fine really.

"I"ve got a cut hand and Francesca has a bruise but other than that we"re okay."

Francesca added: "The car smashed into rocks and made a hell of a noise. I tried my door but muzic-ivan.infouldn"t shift it so we got out the driver"s side.

"There was some moonlight and we just got away from the car as quickly as we muzic-ivan.infould. We ended up on some sort of ledge and my phone started working."

The girls spent 45 minutes climbing up the cliff face and eventually managed to dial 999 at around 9.45pm.

Fire crews rescued them using ropes and they were taken to hospital suffering from the muzic-ivan.infold but were released after an hour.

Martin McGuire, of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The girls were extremely lucky, the car"s a muzic-ivan.infomplete right-off.

"When the vehicle went over the cliff it went over sideways and rolled over and was wedged in a crevice.

"When I looked over the cliff I wondered how on earth they got out. It really is a miracle escape."

muzic-ivan.inforal"s mother Karen, 37, a pre-school teacher, and dad, Dave, 38, an HGV driver, learned of the accident when Francesca called her from the cliff ledge.

Dave said: "Francesca told Karen "we"re on a cliff" and then the line cut out. Karen was screaming. We had no idea where they were.

"I called police and they said they had a 999 call and were heading for Jeffrey"s Leap. I thought they were both dead.

"When I got there I rang Francesca again and got through - she was terrified. The pair of them were hugging and crying.

"At least they had each other. After they were released from hospital they didn"t want to leave other"s side all night."

Karen, who is pregnant with her fourth child, said: "I"m pregnant and it is a miracle I didn"t go into labour it was such a shock.

Francesca"s mother, hospital receptionist Leslie, 47, added: "It is unbelievable we got them both back. We muzic-ivan.infould have been organising two funerals."
